Knowledge and Awareness Level of Healthcare Professionals Towards Antibiotic Stewardship Program in Saudi Arabia

Abstract

Antibiotic resistance is an international issue that affects people's health and could lead to an increase in the rate of mortality if there is no intervention. This study aims to determine the knowledge and awareness level of healthcare professionals toward antibiotic stewardship programs. This is a descriptive study conducted in Saudi Arabia. The information was subsequently gathered and uploaded to the SPSS Version 20 statistical package for social science software for processing. Following analysis, these responses were classified into three various knowledge levels and awareness levels high, moderate, and low level based on the rating that they acquired. The study included 391 participants, pharmacists make up the largest percentage at 48.1%. The majority of healthcare professionals have less than 3 years of experience at 56.0%. The majority of respondents (73.9%) are aware of antimicrobial stewardship programs and their components. Only 32% of participants had high knowledge, 2501% had moderate knowledge, and 43% had low knowledge scores. Overall, the knowledge and awareness level of healthcare professionals towards antibiotic stewardship programs in Saudi Arabia is low. Results highlight both positive and concerning aspects of antimicrobial stewardship practices in healthcare facilities. Participants’ profession was significantly associated with knowledge and awareness of AMS. However, years of practice were only significant with knowledge scores.
