Abstract

In the present study, the chromosome number of Cynaroides section species in Iran is counted andsome of them arereported for the first time in the world based on available sources by preparing the karyotype of chromosome numbers and ideogram analysis of Cynaroides section species. For this purpose, after the germination of seeds, the end part of the root was isolated and after staining by squashing method, the mitotic zone was prepared. In this study, it was found that the base chromosome number in the species of Cynaroides section, except C. iranshahrii, is x= 9, which confirms previous studies and indicates the occurrence of homoploid transformation among the species in this section. The chromosome number of C. iranshahrii was 2n= 4x= 32, which indicates the base number of x= 8 for this species; and it was suggested that it will be isolated from this section and transferred to the Microluphus section.
